Cloud vs Desktop POS Software in Bangladesh: Which Should You Buy?
Every POS buyer in Bangladesh faces this fork: a desktop software installed on the shop PC, or a cloud POS running in the browser. Vendors on each side exaggerate; here is the practical truth.
Cost over 3 years — the honest math
Desktop looks cheaper: pay once (Tk 15,000–50,000), done. Except: yearly AMC fees, paid visits when it breaks, a new license for a second PC, and one day a mandatory "new version" purchase. Cloud is a subscription, but updates, backup, support and new features ride along. Over 3 years the totals are usually closer than the price tags suggest — and cloud carries far less risk.
Data safety — the deciding factor
- Desktop: your business lives on one hard disk in a hot, dusty shop with unstable power. Disk death, theft, fire, ransomware — any one of them erases everything, including who owes you money.
- Cloud: data is backed up in a datacenter automatically. A dead PC costs you the PC, not your business history.
"But the internet goes!" — the load-shedding question
Fair concern. Two honest answers: mobile data is now cheap and reliable enough that a phone hotspot covers outages for a POS''s tiny bandwidth needs; and while a desktop POS survives an internet cut, it does not survive the power cut that usually caused it — while a cloud POS keeps running on a charged laptop or tablet over hotspot.
Remote access & multi-branch
This is where cloud simply wins. Owner checks today''s sales from home; a second branch shares one product list and one stock view; the accountant works without visiting. Desktop needs expensive LAN/VPN gymnastics for any of this.
Decision checklist
- Only one PC, one branch, no wish to see the shop from home, strong local IT support → desktop is defensible.
- Want your business in your pocket, multi-branch now or later, no appetite for backup discipline → cloud, clearly.
